On a wintery June day, a private tourist vessel was returning fr om a five-day tour to Cape Horn and the Chilean fjords when it was caught in a sudden storm. Many of the ship's systems, including navigation, were damaged. The captain steered the ship into one of the harbors in the fjords, wh ere they spent the night. The following morning, at first light, a Mi-8 transport helicopter and an MB-339 training aircraft took off from Ushuaia Airport to search for the vessel. A UH-1H and a C-101CC also departed from Puerto Williams. The rescuers are unaware of the ship's exact location, but they can tune into its emergency frequencies of 500 kHz or 121.5 MHz AM for ADF guidance. Despite the adverse weather conditions, including sub-zero temperatures, strong winds, precipitation, and fog, their mission is to bring back the tourists and the ship's crew safely.
Although this is a joint search operation, the country whose helicopters evacuate the survivors will gain additional prestige on the international stage. Therefore, not only human lives are at stake, but also the honor of the nation.
The countries are permitted to cross the air border, but to maintain order and assist in the search, air forces have been scrambled in the form of a flight of F-5Es from Chile and a flight of A-4E-Cs from Argentina. Shooting down any country's aircraft or vessels is strictly prohibited.
