Idiots' Delight was an American Boeing B-17 stationed at Bury St Edmunds (Rougham) during World War II. The aircraft was the first B-17 of the 94th BG to survive 50 missions without having to turn back because of a mechanical failure of some kind. It flew its first mission on July 14th, 1943 and its 50th flown on March 22nd, 1944.
On the 19th of June, 1944, the aircraft was struck by flak near Alderney Island and was forced to turn back. The B-17 was forced to ditch in the English Channel, killing 9 out of 10 of the crewmembers. The lone survivor, Jim Wolfe, the radio operator, was taken POW, though another source indicates KIA.
