After costly engine upgrades from GE Canada, and early 90s budget cuts, the RCAF was left with no choice but to move most of its squadrons to the CF-18, but concentrated all remaining CF-14 assets to two squadrons to fulfill its NORAD commitments. 441 would cover the Canadian West and 434 would be reponsible for the East.
